When I took the QM1 exam in 2002 there were no questions on wrn6 so that's probably not worth studying. The QM rate manual is not up-to-date. For example I studied the section on the old style compass but all my questions were on the digital fluxgate magnetic compass which is not covered in the book. Which exam are you taking?

i am taking the qm1 exam again (probably) in february. if anyone on active duty has taken the exam in september, and can give me any guidance, i would appreciate it. i am in the reserves and do not have access to navssi, wrn6, night goggles, or most other equipment that active duty has. please let me know if there are any publications available on line that i may be able to obtain to help with this exam.

thanks
navssi, wrn6
Just FYI, the WRN6 was integrated into NAVSSI so it's not something that will come up on your test as far as "how to work the wrn6" type questions. Be sure to get up to speed on the Digital Fluxgate Magnetic compass because they won't ask you about the old style compass they have in the book.

If you can get a copy of the latest Bowditch it has info on the Flux Gate. The QM manual was edited to include NAVSSI and the DFGMC. For Night Vision Goggles your best bet is to download the SM 2&3 manual.

the qm manual still lists the wrn-6 as replacing all satnav, and it doesn't discuss the digital fluxgate magnetic compass ata ll.

On page 8-52 of the QM manual there is a section on NAVSSI. I stand corrected on the DFGMC in the that manual but it is discussed in Bowditch.

To all that posted and assisted me, thank you. I finally made qm1 this past cycle.

Also, has anyone else received unsolicited email from a QMCM supposedly from this site? His email address is Byroninky@wmconnect.com. I did, and I think I am going to report it to my reserve center. If this QMCM does read this message, and is genuine, I apologize. However, you probably should have asked people on htis site if they wanted to be contacted. I, like most people, DO NOT ACCEPT UNSOLICITED EMAILS.

Anyway, again, thank you to all, and good luck to all on future exams.

Congratulations on making PO1!

QMCM Franklin is a old salt with years of experience. See the two articles posted to QMSS.com. His tips and techniques are being taken out of Bowditch, and the Radar and training manuals, so he is coming to our site to keep them in the navigating public's eye.

See my post in the Registered Users, above; he has some questions about current practice-- and you are a current practitioner. I suspect he is more comfortable with email than with bulletin boards; he has been giving me a pile of material that I have to work through: a sea-story pending about the USS Intrepid, for instance.

I would consider it a favor if you could help him out. For that matter, now that the studying pressure is off, if you could send me an article on the current state of navigation that would help us both: I can put it on the web site. How do you conduct piloting in restricted waters? How does GPS/NAVSSI/etc. get incorporated? What about open-ocean nav? Keep in mind I'm a submariner, so I know nothing about surface ship practices.
